Biletin is a powdered material that was extracted from the pulp of juiced (squeezed) Shiikuwasha and is standardized to contain at least 10% PMF.
PMF (polymethoxy flavonoid) is a generic term for flavonoid compounds whose hydroxyl groups are replaced with methoxy groups.
Two common PMFs are nobiletin and tangeretin, the former having 6 methoxy groups and the latter having 5.
Nobiletin and Tangeretin
Nobiletin and tangeretin are expected to improve memory impairment (dementia etc.), allergic reactions, sugar metabolism, lipid metabolism and liver function, and inhibit melanin synthesis (lighten the skin), all of which contribute to maintaining good health.
All of the shiikuwasha used for Biletin are produced in Okinawa.
Applicability as an ingredient to drinks
PMFs are lipid-soluble and not water-soluble on their own.
As Biletin is encapsulated in cyclic oligosaccharides when made into powder, its recommended daily amount (10 – 45 mg/day) can be easily dissolved in water, and is suitable as an ingredient for drinks.
Effects on energy metabolism
Participants with deteriorating liver functions took 20 or 100 mg/day of Biletin for 12 consecutive weeks. Their total cholesterol levels, non HDL-C, arteriosclerosis index and triglyceride decreased significantly.
Based on the above, we can expect Biletin to have beneficial properties that can lower cholesterol and triglyceride, and help prevent arteriosclerosis.
Effects on the liver function
Participants with deteriorating liver functions took 20 or 100 mg/day of Biletin for 12 consecutive weeks. Their yGTP levels decreased significantly.
Based on the above, we can expect Biletin to have beneficial properties that can improve the liver function.
